Biography

William Raggett was born in the spring of 1878 at Rickmansworth. He was one of seven children (five sons and two daughters) born to William (senior) and Mary Raggett. In 1881 the family lived at New Road, Rickmansworth, where William (senior) was employed as a Paper Maker. At the time of the 1891 Census the family lived at Mill Square, Rickmansworth, and by 1901 they had moved to 8 Dickinson Square in the town. In both Census William (senior) was recorded working as a Paper Packer. In 1891 William (junior) was employed as a Page (Domestic Servant), and by 1901 he was working at a Paper Mill as an Oiler and Cleaner.

William married in the spring of 1909, and his wife, Mabel, delivered a daughter in 1910. In the 1911 Census the family lived at Asylum Cottage, 4 Tanner’s Hill Lane, Abbots Langley, and William (junior) was employed at the Asylum as an Attendant on the Insane.

He was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). He was recorded serving with the RGA in subsequent editions of the Roll of Honour through to the end of the War.

In August 1916 the Leavesden Parish Record noted that William Raggett, an Attendant at the Leavesden Asylum, had “joined HM Forces”.

William was listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, serving as a Gunner with the 19th Company of the RGA, and based at Sheerness. His address in the records was given at 66 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.

William Raggett survived the War.
