Biography

Frederick Powell was born in 1877 at Sevenoaks, one of seven sons born to William and Sarah Powell. By 1881 the family lived at Waterdell, near Black Boy Wood in Leavesden, and in 1891 the Census showed that they had moved to High Elms Lane. At the time of the 1901 Census they lived at Mount Pleasant, Leavesden. Throughout this time William worked as an Agricultural Labourer, and in 1901 Frederick was listed with the same occupation.

Frederick married Kate Swallow in the autumn of 1905 and by 1911 the family lived at The Bank, Bedmond. The couple had four children, three sons and a daughter, and Frederick worked as a Farm Labourer.

In August 1916 the Leavesden Parish Records showed that Fred Powell, a Farm Labourer at the Leavesden Asylum had “joined HM Forces”.

The Abbots Langley Parish Roll of Honour recorded Frederick for the first time in December 1916 serving with the 7th Training Reserve Battalion. The next month he was listed serving with the 71st Training Reserve Battalion in the Parish Roll of Honour, and it is not known if one or other of the references was a mistake, or if he did transfer between the two battalions.

In May 1917 the Parish Magazine reported that Frederick had been listed sick.

In the final Roll of Honour, in December 1918, Frederick was listed with the Royal Scots, but the Magazine was not more specific regarding a battalion.

Frederick was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, serving with the 465th Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps. In these records he was shown as living at Bedmond.

Frederick Powell survived the War.
