Biography

George Parr was born in 1877 at Rockwell Green, Wellington, Somerset. He was one of eight children (five sons and three daughters) born to James and Elizabeth Parr. James worked as a Labourer, and in the 1891 Census George was also recorded working as a General Labourer at the age of 13.

He was married at Bath on 21st May 1907. A son, Henry George was born on 24th May 1909, and baptised at Abbots Langley on 11th July 1909. By the time of the 1911 Census George and his family had moved to 61 Glyn Street, Porth, in the Rhondda Valley. George worked as a Coal Miner.

It is not known when George returned to the Abbots Langley area however he enlisted on 28th September 1916, aged 39 years 3 months. He undertook a Medical at Watford on 23rd October 1916, and stated that he was living at The Bell Inn at Bedmond, where he was the Publican. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) on 28th September 1916.

George was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in December 1916, serving with the RAMC. George’s Service Record confirmed that he enlisted to the RAMC on 28th September 1916, and was discharged on 28th November 1919.

He was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, September 1919 and Autumn 1919 serving with RAMC Dental Annex at Kantara (100 miles north-east of Cairo in Egypt).

George returned to the Bell Inn at Bedmond where he remained the Publican until his death in March 1944.
