Biography

Albert Miles was born in the winter of 1897 at Abbots Langley. He was one of ten children (five sons and five daughters) born to Frederick and Elizabeth Miles. Four of the five sons served in the Great War. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Hazelwood Park near Hunton Bridge, and Frederick was recorded working as a Gas Works Stoker. By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to Marlin Square at Abbots Langley.

Albert was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in November 1914, serving with the 1st Life Guards.

His Medal Roll indicated that he was sent to France on 19th May 1915.

He was recorded serving with the 1st Life Guards in the Roll of Honour throughout the War, and afterwards in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, Spring 1919, and Autumn 1919, where he his home address was given at 49 Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley.

At the end of the War when Albert requested his Medals in May 1920, his 1914/15 Stars were incorrectly engraved with the name “Miller” and not “Miles”, and had to be returned for correction.

Albert Miles survived the War, as did his brothers, Frederick, Maurice and William.
