Biography

Charles Matthews was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Charles was listed serving with the 433rd Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps and his address was given at Leverstock Green, although he was listed in the Abbots Langley List.

Charles was born on 15th April 1886 at Leverstock Green. He was one of five children born to George and Elizabeth Matthews. At the time of the 1891 Census the family lived at St Albans Road, Leverstock Green. George worked as an Agricultural Labourer. In the 1901 Census it was indicated that the family had moved to Bennetts End, Hemel Hempstead, and by that time George was employed as a Horse Keeper on a Farm, and Charles worked as a Carter to a Coal Dealer. By 1911 the family had returned to Leverstock Green where both George and Charles worked as Agricultural Labourers.

In the summer of 1913 Charles married Nellie Hollick at Hemel Hempstead. It is not known when Charles enlisted.

Charles Matthews survived the War.
