Biography
Arthur Maples was born in the spring of 1896 at Wandsworth. He was one of four children (two daughters and two sons) born to Jarvis and Louisa Maples. In the 1901 Census the family was recorded living at 39 Montserrat Road, Bushey, and Jarvis was recorded as a Retired Licenced Victualler. The family employed a live-in Housemaid/Servant and Cook.
In the 1911 Census Arthur was recorded living with his cousin, William Fenton, and his family at “Rosedale”, Westminster Drive, Westcliff on Sea, near Southend on Sea.
Arthur’s Army Service Record showed that he attested at the Bedfordshire Barracks on 19th April 1916 and gave a preference to join the Royal Field Artillery. He was called for a Medical on 31st July at Putney and was described as of “fair physical development”, and gave his trade as a Grocer’s Assistant, and was recorded living at a “Mile End Square”, Abbots Langley, which was corrected to Marlin Square. He was called up for War Service and enlisted on 21st August 1916 to the 575th Enrolment Company, and the next day was posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour recorded him for the first time in September 1916. Arthur was posted to a Reserve Employment Company on 7th October 1917, and moved to the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) on 16th November, and joined the 17th Company on 28th November at Tynemouth.
On 27th May 1918 Arthur embarked for Sierra Leone, arriving on 10th June 1918. He was admitted to Hospital between 7th and 19th September 1919 suffering from malaria, and was examined by No 1 Travelling Medical Board on 14th September and placed in Category B1. After leaving hospital Arthur remained in Africa and between 27th January and 25th March 1920 was granted leave on the West Coast of Africa. He was recorded in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, Spring 1919, and Autumn 1919.
After returning home and Arthur was demobilised on 4th September 1920 from 50th Company of the RGA.
