Biography

Francis Lythaby was born at Filleigh, Devon in the autumn of 1882. He was first recorded in the Census records in 1891 where he was listed as the step-son of Francis Shapland, and his wife Amelia. Presumably his father had died, and his Mother had re-married. In 1891 the family lived at Barnstaple. By 1901 Francis had moved to Abbots Langley and was employed as an Officer (attendant) at the Leavesden Asylum, where he also lived in Officer’s accommodation. On 7th January 1905 Francis married Ethel Dennis at Leavesden, and by the time of the 1911 Census the couple had three sons, and lived at 5 Asylum Terrace, Asylum Road, Abbots Langley (pictured).

Francis was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1916, where he was recorded serving with the Royal Fusiliers. In December 1917 the Parish Magazine recorded that Francis was reported wounded, and in the January 1918 Magazine he was listed serving with the 106th Labour Company.

In the May 1918 Parish Magazine it was noted that Francis had been Discharged Disabled.

Francis Lythaby survived the War.
