Biography
Herbert Lowe was born in the spring of 1881 at Writtle, Essex. He was the eldest of six children (all boys) born to Frederick and Eliza Lowe. At the time of the 1891 Census the family lived at St John’s Green, Writtle, near Chelmsford. Frederick worked as a Carpenter.
At the time of the 1901 Census Herbert lived with his Uncle and Aunt, Herbert and Louisa Lowe, and their son Frederick, at 11 Churton Place, Westminster. Herbert (senior) worked as a Commissionaire.
In 1906 Herbert married and in the 1911 Census was recorded employed as a Carpenter by the Metropolitan Asylum Board and living at 87 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Herbert in July 1916 serving with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). At that time when aircraft were built from wood Herbert’s carpentry skills could have been the reason for joining the RFC. Herbert remained with the RFC until in April 1918 the Royal Air Force (RAF) was formed. He continued with the RAF until the end of the War, and was recorded in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records, where he was listed serving with the 45th Squadron, and his address was given at 87 Breakspeare Road.
Herbert Lowe survived the War.
