Biography

Arthur Lodge was born in autumn 1881 at Abbots Langley. He was one of seven children born to James and Eliza Lodge. In the 1891 Census the family was recorded living at Kitters Green, on the outskirts of Abbots Langley village. James worked as a Gardener Domestic. In the 1901 Census the family was noted living at Manor House Cottages, Kitters Green. James was employed as a Groom at the Manor House Stables, and Arthur had started work as a Carpenter’s Apprentice.

At some time before June 1908 Arthur had moved from the family home and had married. In June 1908 a daughter was born, and was baptised at Abbots Langley on 5th July 1908.

It is not known when Arthur joined up and little has been found regarding his period of service during the Great War. He was however listed in the Absent Voter Records for Langleybury for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, where he was listed serving as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers.

Arthur was recorded in the Langleybury Roll of Honour, when it was compiled at the end of the War, and despite his early connections with the village of Abbots Langley he was not recorded in any of their records throughout the War. However through his birth, and through spending his early years in the village the “Back to the Front” Project has included his story within the Abbots Langley records for the Project.

Arthur Lodge survived the War.
