Biography
Walter Haynes was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1916, serving with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). In April 1918 the RNAS was incorporated into the newly formed Royal Air Force (RAF), and throughout 1918 Walter was recorded serving with the RAF.
He was recorded in the Absent Voter Records in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, serving as an Aircraftman 1st Class with the RAF, and living at 40 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley. The RAF rank of Aircraftman 1st Class had replaced the RNAS rank of Air Mechanic 2nd Class in 1918. Both ranks were considered training ranks.
Walter was born in the summer of 1884 at Abbots Langley. He was one of five children born to Biscoe and Elizabeth Haynes. His younger brother, Sidney, also served in the Great War. In 1891 Biscoe worked at the Leavesden Asylum as an Attendant, and the family lived in Breakspeare Road. By 1901 the family had moved to 40 Adrian Road, and Biscoe had retired. The family remained at this address and in the 1911 Census Walter was recorded as a Cotton Trade Salesman.
Walter Haynes survived the War, as did his brother Sidney, who was discharged as being “unlikely to become an effective soldier” in November 1915 from the Royal Artillery.
