Biography

Charles Hart was born at Bushey in the spring of 1883. On 24th December 1904 he married Annie Halsey at Chorleywood. By the time of the 1911 Census the couple had had three children – John born in 1905 at Chorleywood, James born in 1907 at Abbots Langley, and Emily who was born in 1911 also at Abbots Langley. Charles worked as a Bricklayer’s Labourer and the family lived at 11 Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley.

Charles’ Service Record noted that he attested on 26th November 1915 at Watford into the 1st London Divisional Engineers, and that he was living at 11 Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley, and working as a Stoker. On the next day he was transferred to the Army Reserve, until on 29th March 1916 he was posted to the 19th London Divisional Engineers as a Sapper at Bethnal Green. On 1st April he was transferred to the 2/5th London Field Company.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Charles, serving with the Royal Engineers, in May 1916.

Charles embarked for France at Southampton on 29th September 1916, and disembarked at Rouen the next day. The National Roll of the Great War noted that Charles served on the Somme and at Ypres, but was not specific about when or where.

After the Armistice Charles was granted leave to England between 31st December 1918 and 14th January 1919. Whilst on leave he was detained for demobilisation, and on 4th March 1919 he was demobilised from 129th Field Company (Royal Engineers) to 11 Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley. He was classed Medical Category A1, and gave his occupation before enlistment as Driver and Stoker, and his Trade as an Engine Driver.
