Biography

Joseph Kimpton was born in the winter of 1898 at Watford. He was the eldest of three children (two sons and one daughter) born to David and Elizabeth Kimpton. David worked as a Blacksmith, and in 1901 the family lived at 56 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley.

The National Roll of the Great War noted that Joseph volunteered in September 1914. He was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, serving with the Royal Field Artillery (RFA), and by December 1914 had been assigned to the Hertfordshire RFA. In the December 1915 Roll of Honour he had transferred to the Hampshire RFA, and by this time the National Roll confirmed that he had been drafted to India, where he served with his battery until 1917, when he transferred to Mesopotamia. He took part in various engagements including those at Kut, Mosul, and Hit, before returning to England and was demobilised in August 1919.

Joseph was listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, and was shown serving with the Royal Field Artillery, and his address was given at Railway Terrace, Abbots Langley in 1918, and 56 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley in Spring and Autumn 1919.

Joseph Kimpton survived the War, as did his cousins Alfred and William Kimpton. William was captured in June 1918 and was held as a Prisoner of War until the end of the War.
