Biography
Two Charles Harris were found in the National Census living in Abbots Langley. Both have brothers called Frederick. Charles J and Frederick G Harris lived at Adrian Road, the sons of Frederick and Helena Harris. Frederick (senior) was employed as a Mechanical Engineer in at the Leavesden Asylum by the Metropolitan Asylum Board.
The other Charles Harris was one of nine children (four sons and five daughters) born to Charles and Emma Harris. Charles (senior), a Boot Maker, lived at the High Street, Abbots Langley. Another of Charles’ sons was named Frederick, and a third was called William. A Pension Record was found for William, confirming that he lived at the High Street, Abbots Langley, and it has been assumed that these brothers are the ones that served.
Charles (junior) was born on 8th June 1891 at Abbots Langley, when the family lived at the High Street, at the time of the 1901 Census. Charles’ record in the 1911 Census has not been traced.
He was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in December 1916, serving with the Seaforth Highlanders, he was listed each month through to the end of the War.
It is presumed that Charles survived the War, as did his brothers Frederick and William.
