Biography

Archibald Howe was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Archibald was listed serving with the 8th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, and his address was given as “Great Westwood” Farm, Abbots Langley.

Archibald was born on 29th September 1893 at Sarratt, and was baptised at Chipperfield. He was one of three sons born to George and Fanny Howe. His elder brother Bertie also served in the Great War. In the 1901 Census the family lived at “Calliper’s Lodge”, Chipperfield, where George was employed as a Gardener. The family was recorded living at the same address in the 1911 Census. By this time Archibald, as well as George, was employed as a Gardener.

It is not known when Archibald enlisted, however his Medal Roll noted that he initially enlisted with the 1st Battalion of the Hertfordshire Regiment, before being transferred to the 8th Gloucester’s. The Autumn 1918 Absent Voter Record noted that his address was “Great Westwood”, which was situated at Bucks Hill, close to Langleybury. Through appearing in the Absent Voter Record for Abbots Langley he qualified as an Abbots Langley man, but he was not recorded anywhere else in the Parish records. His brother, Bertie Howe was recorded only in the Parish Records and Roll of Honour for Langleybury.

Lieutenant Colonel Walter Jones was also recorded in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918, returning from the War to “Great Westwood” Farm, where it is presumed that he was the owner, and Archibald was a Gardener.

Archibald Howe and his brother Bertie both survived the War.
