Biography

It is believed that Frederick Horsnell was born on 22nd June 1880 at Camberwell. He was one of seven children (five sons and two daughters) born to Joseph and Esther Horsnell. In the 1891 Census the family was listed living at Back Lane Cottages, Bushey, where Joseph worked as a House Painter. By 1901 the family had moved to 29 Herkemes Road, Bushey, and Frederick was listed in the Census working as a Plumber’s Apprentice.

Frederick married Harriet Gorringe in 1902 and between 1903 and 1910 the couple had three children, all born at Watford, and in the 1911 Census the family lived at 22 Villiers Road, Oxhey. Frederick worked as a Plumber.

It is not known when the family moved to the Abbots Langley area, however Frederick was reported wounded in the Hertfordshire Advertiser of 18th March 1916 and had been employed by the Metropolitan Asylum Board as an Attendant at the Leavesden Asylum.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Frederick in November 1914, serving with the Worcester Regiment. He was recorded each month until January 1918 serving with the Worcester’s, before transferring to the Cyclist Corps. However the Medal Roll for Frederick Charles Horsnell, presumably the same person, indicated that he was sent to the Balkans on 21st August 1918, and at that point was serving with the Army Service Corps. This man was demobilised on 23rd May 1919.

Frederick Horsnell survived the War.
