Biography

Arthur Graves was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley for Spring 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Arthur was listed serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, and his address was given at
Troley Bottom, Abbots Langley.

Arthur was born in the summer of 1874 at Christchurch, Hampshire. He was one of six children born to George and Ellen Graves. His brother William also served in the Great War. George Graves was a former Cavalry soldier and in 1881 was employed at the Leavesden Asylum as an Attendant. From 1881 the family lived at Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley, however the 1891 Census noted that Arthur and his older brother George had both moved away. Both men were boarding at 9 Montpelier Place, Westminster. George was employed as a Cellarman, and Arthur as a Waiter.

It is not known when Arthur enlisted, and his Service Record has not survived.

Arthur Graves survived the War, as did his brother William.
