Biography

Alfred Haggar was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in spring 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Alfred was listed serving as a Private with the Army Service Corps Remounts Service, and his address was given at
Leverstock Green. The Army Service Corps Remounts Service was responsible for provisioning horses and mules to all other Army units, and had bases both in the United Kingdom and overseas.

Alfred was born in the summer of 1894 at Ware. He was one of six children born to Alfred (senior) and Mary Haggar. In the 1901 and 1911 Census the family lived at Hertford, and by 1911 Alfred (senior) was listed as a Labourer Out of Employment. Alfred (junior) worked as a Labourer leather Dressing.

On 29th September 1914 a daughter was born to Alfred and Mary at Leverstock Green and it is presumed that the whole family had re-located from Hertford. Alfred (senior) would have been 50 when the War broke out in August 1914, so it is presumed that it was Alfred (junior) who enlisted and was listed in the Absent Voter Records, returning to Leverstock Green. But this is by no means conclusive as even at an advanced age Alfred (senior) could have enlisted and the Army Service Corps Remounts Service would have been an appropriate, non-combat unit.

Alfred Haggar survived the War.
