Biography
Ernest Gower was referred to in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine records as Ernest George Gower, but was christened Ernest James Gower. He was born in the autumn of 1887 at Abbots Langley. He was one of four children born to James and Susan Gower. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Adrian Road in Abbots Langley, where James worked as a Gardener, and Ernest as a News Boy. In the 1911 Census Ernest was recorded living as a Boarder at 68 High Street, Romford, and worked as a Blacksmith.
Ernest was not recorded each month in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour, however in September 1917 the Magazine reported -
"We are glad to hear that Ernest George Gower, of the Worcester Regiment, late of this Parish, who was severely wounded, has been awarded the Military Cross. It seems that the old zest and skill with which he played football has served him in good service as a soldier”.
It is presumed that Ernest Gower survived the War.
