Biography

Henry Evered was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Henry was listed serving with the Motor Transport section of the Army Service Corps (MTASC) , and his address was given as “Great Westwood”, Abbots Langley, hence he has qualified to be included in the Abbots Langley records..

However Henry was included throughout the War in the Langleybury Parish records. The Autumn 1918 Absent Voter Record noted that his address was “Great Westwood”, which was situated at Bucks Hill, close to Langleybury. Henry was included in the Roll of Honour for Langleybury in the Hertfordshire Advertiser on 17th October 1914, and was listed serving with the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC). He was also recorded in the Langleybury Parish Magazine where it was noted that he was at the Front in May 1915. The June 1916 Magazine noted that Henry had transferred to the Army Service Corps, and he was once again listed in the Magazine in February 1917.At the end of the War he was commemorated, with the rank of Captain, on the Langleybury Roll of Honour.

Henry was born on 28th May 1886 in the USA. He was the only child of Henry (senior) and Etheldreda Evered. In the 1891 Census the family lived at 2 Rye Hill Park, Peckham, and employed a General Servant. Henry (senior) was a Merchant in Novelties. By 1901 the family had moved to Hampstead and Henry (senior) was employed as a Hospital Secretary. The 1911 Census provided more details about the family. They lived at 4A Belsize Grove, Hampstead, and Henry (senior) was employed as the Secretary for the Victoria Hospital for Chelsea at Chelsea. Henry (junior) was employed as a Clerk at the Stock Exchange.

Henry (junior) married Mary Waters on 28th September 1912 at St Pancras, and after the wedding the couple lived at 58 Osnaburgh Street, near Regents Park in north-west London.

It is believed that Henry enlisted early in the War, however his Medal Roll indicated that joined up with the Army Service Corps (ASC) with the rank 2nd Lieutenant, and progressed to the rank of Major, although the Absent Voter Record for Abbots Langley for Autumn 1918 identified him serving as a Captain, one rank lower than Major. The Medal Roll noted that he landed in France on 4th January 1915.

Henry Evered survived the War.
