Biography
Wallace Stanton Geldard was born in the Summer of 1889 at Birkenhead. He was one of three sons born to Wallace Stanton (senior) and Elizabeth Geldard. Wallace (senior) was employed as a Railway Clerk, and in the 1901 Census the family lived at “Mayfield”, 7 St James Road, Watford. By 1911 the Geldard family had moved to “Hillside”, Lauderdale Road, Abbots Langley.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first listed Wallace Geldard serving with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in November 1915, and the following month noted that he had transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). Wallace was listed throughout the War serving with the RFC until April 1918, when the Royal Air Force (RAF) was formed, and incorporated the RNAS and the RFC.
Wallace Geldard survived the War, as did his brother Harold, who was discharged disabled when he was demobilised in March 1919, due to deafness. This had possibly been caused by the sound of the guns, as he served as a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Harold Geldard was remembered in the records at Langleybury but was not included in those of Abbots Langley.
