Biography

Harry Filby was born in the Autumn of 1899 at Abbots Langley. He was one of five children born to Harry (senior) and Alice Filby. The couple had two sons and three daughters and in the 1901 Census the family lived at Tanners Hill, Abbots Langley. Harry (senior) was employed by the Metropolitan Asylum Board, and worked as an Asylum Attendant. By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to 19 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first listed Harry in May 1915 serving as a Gunner with the Herts Royal Field Artillery (RFA). He was recorded with the RFA through to the end of the War, and also in the Absent Voters Records for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. In both of these post-War documents his address was given at 19 Breakspeare Road.

Harry Filby survived the War, however his cousin George Filby died from his wounds in a Military Hospital in Birmingham on 17th August 1916.
