Biography

William Farley was born at Watford on 3rd October 1892. He was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, when he was listed serving with Kitchener’s Army. This indicated that he was one of the many thousands of men that in the first weeks of the War answered the call of Lord Kitchener, the Secretary of State for War, for volunteers. His Medal Roll confirmed that William enlisted on 10th August 1914, with the Bedfordshire Regiment.

In the December 1914 Parish Roll of Honour, William was recorded serving with the 4th Bedfordshire’s. In the May 1915 Parish Magazine he was reported wounded, and on 31st May 1915 he was Discharged Disabled and Unfit for War Service having had the third and fourth fingers of his left hand amputated. It is not known how this happened, however as the 4th Bedfordshire’s were employed on Home defence until 1916, the injury would have occurred whilst William was still based in England.

It is not known how William Farley was associated with Abbots Langley other than through being included in the Parish Magazine Roll of Honour. He was born at Watford and may have moved to the village, or worked there. In the spring of 1918 William married Dorothy H Sear at Watford.

William Farley survived the War.
