Biography

Isaac Dowse was born on 18th June 1892 at Abbots Langley. At the time of the 1901 Census he and his sister Hilda were the only children of Isaac (senior) and Eliza Dowse. Isaac (senior) worked as an Agricultural Labourer and the family lived at Bedmond. By the time of the 1911 Census Isaac had re-married (presumably his first wife had died). A second daughter, Winifred, had been born in 1910 to Isaac and his second wife Jane, and a second son, from Jane’s previous marriage was living with the family in Bedmond at the time of the 1911 Census..

In 1911 Isaac (junior) worked as a Farm Labourer. He was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1918, but the name of his Unit was not given. However by December 1918 the Parish Magazine recorded that he was serving with the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. No details have been identified to show when Isaac was demobilised.

Isaac Dowse survived the War, and was related to many local members of the Dowse family who served in the Great War.
