Biography

John Ellis was one of three brothers from Abbots Langley that served in the Great War. He was born in 1885, one of seven sons and one daughter born to John and Janette (Jesse) Ellis. John (senior) was employed as a House Painter and the family lived in Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. John (junior) married in 1903 and lived with his wife, Elizabeth, and three children – Gracie, Arthur and a Nurse Child, Alfred Rose – at Troley Bottom, Abbots Langley. John (junior) was employed as a Churchyard Attendant.

John was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in April 1917 serving with the Kent Regiment. At some point in 1917 John was transferred to the Labour Corps, and the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, Spring and Autumn 1919, more specifically place him with the 124th Labour Company of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. In each Absent Voter List John’s address was given at Troley Bottom, Abbots Langley.

John survived the War, as did his brother Arthur. However his brother Percy emigrated to Canada and returned with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Percy was killed in action at Passchendaele on 30th October 1917.
