Biography
Simon Diaper was born on 19th November 1889 at Abbots Langley. His father John Diaper was employed as an Asylum Attendant, and from 1901 the family lived at 37 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley. John and his wife Eliza had two sons and five daughters. Both sons, Simon and his younger brother Arthur, served in the Great War.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Simon in July 1917 and showed him serving with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC). He was recorded with this unit through to the end of the War. His Medal Card indicated that he served with the 1st Battalion of the KRRC.
The Parish Magazine also recorded that his sister, Amelia died in July 1917 and was buried at Abbots Langley on 25th, aged 17.
Simon was listed in the Autumn 1918, Spring and Autumn 1919 Absent Voter Records, and shown serving with the 1st KRRC. His home address was given at High Street, Abbots Langley. His Medal Card noted that he was eventually demobilised on 8th March 1921.
Simon’s younger brother, Arthur, received a gun-shot wound to his ankle on the opening day of the Battle of Messines on 7th June 1917, and was discharged disabled soon afterwards. Both brothers survived the War.
