Biography

William East was born in the winter of 1899 at Abbots Langley. He was one of five children born to William (senior) and Priscilla East who lived at 76 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley. William (senior) and Priscilla had three sons and two daughters, and William (senior) worked as a Bricklayer.

William enlisted on 12th March 1917 at Watford, initially serving with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry. He was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in April 1917. When he enlisted he gave his address at 78 Marlin Square, and his occupation as a Paper Worker. At some point in 1918 he transferred to the Tank Corps, where he served as a Gunner. He was recorded in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, and Spring and Autumn 1919, serving with the Tank Corps, and his home address was given at 76 Marlin Square.

William East survived the War, however his brother George was killed in action on the Somme on 26th August 1917.
