Biography

John Denton was born in the winter of 1878 at Harlington, Bedfordshire. He married Elizabeth Draper on 29th July 1908. In the 1911 Census the family lived over The Draper’s Shop in Abbots Langley Village, and John was recorded as an Attendant at the Asylum. The couple had three children, two sons and a daughter. Their second son, George, was born on 3rd November 1915, four weeks before John attested on 30th November. He was assigned to the Army Reserve and sent home to 9 Trowley Bottom to await mobilisation.

John was mobilised on 17th June 1916, and on 19th June was posted to the 5th Bedfordshire’s. He was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, but his unit was not recorded until August when he was shown serving with 5th Bedfordshire’s. On 24th June he was posted to the 6th Bedfordshire’s, and on 2nd December to 3rd Bedfordshire’s.

On 1st February 1917 John was posted to a Base Depot in France, and on 17th February moved again, this time to the 10th South Wales Borderers (SWB). He remained with the SWB until 4th June 1918 when he was admitted to 47 General Hospital at Le Treport. His ailment is unknown but John’s Service record showed that from 26th September 1919 he was awarded 8 shillings and 2 pence each week in recompense for being considered 5% disabled due to Trench Foot. On 18th June 1918 he was despatched back to England, and admitted to Camp H at Winchester. On 24th August 1918 he was transferred to the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), and remained with this unit until being demobilised on 25th September 1919 to 9 Trowley Bottom, Abbots Langley.
