Biography
Herbert Couchman’s association with Abbots Langley is unconfirmed. He first appeared in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in March 1917, despite serving in France from very early in the War. This date coincided with his marriage to Ethel M Webb at Watford between January and March 1917. The couple may have settled in the Parish after their wedding, or maybe Ethel had an association with the village, and hence Herbert’s inclusion in the Roll of Honour through to the end of the War.
Herbert Couchman was born in the summer of 1892 at Faversham. The 1901 Census showed that he lived with his sister, and parents Frederick and Frances Couchman at Norman Road in the town. His father worked as a Clerk in a Gun Cotton Factory.
By 1911 Herbert had enlisted and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). He was based at McGregor Barracks, Stanhope Lines, Aldershot, and as a regular soldier was one of the first men to be despatched to France with the British Expeditionary Force. His Medal Roll noted that he embarked for France on 15th August 1914.
Herbert Couchman survived the War.
