Biography

Stephen Constable was born at Maidstone in 1876. He married in 1900 and in the 1901 Census he lived at 74 Marlin Square with his wife Florence. Stephen was employed as an Asylum Attendant by the Metropolitan Asylum Board. The couple had two children, a son born in 1904 and a daughter in 1905.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded him in August 1916, serving with the 4th Northamptonshire’s. He probably didn’t spend much time with this battalion, as it was not recorded on his Medal Roll. The Parish Roll of Honour noted that he was serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) from January 1917, but it was likely that he transferred to this unit much earlier in the War. His Medal Roll showed him serving with the RAMC throughout the remainder of the War, and his role in civilian life at the Asylum would have been well suited to the work of this unit. Many men employed at the Asylum were posted to the RAMC.

Stephen was listed in the Autumn 1918 and Autumn 1919 Absent Voters Records serving with the 331st Field Ambulance of the RAMC. In these records his address for shown at 10 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.

Stephen Constable survived the War.
