Biography

Alfred Collier was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Alfred was listed serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) at 53rd General Hospital, and his address was given at Railway Terrace, Abbots Langley. The 53rd General Hospital was located at Wimereux, to the north of Boulogne until February 1919.

Alfred was born at Gossoms End, near Berkhamsted in the summer of 1887. He was one of seven children born to William and Annie Collier. At the time of the 1891 Census the family lived at Chipperfield where William worked as a Gardener. In the 1901 Census they had moved to Boxmoor. William continued to work as a Gardener, whilst Alfred worked as a Butcher’s Assistant. In 1911 Alfred had moved away as was lodging at 6 Thomas Street, Windsor and he was employed as a Slaughter Man Butcher.

It is not known when Alfred enlisted, however he survived the War.
