Biography

John Clarke’s association with Abbots Langley was through marriage to Edith Fuller at St Lawrence Church, in the village, on 6th March 1918. John Clarke was aged 25 at the time and was serving as a Rifleman with the King’s Royal Rifles. He had been born at Aylesford in Kent.

Edith Fuller was aged 23 and had been born in 1895 at Uxbridge. In the 1911 Census Edith worked as a General Domestic Servant at “Mayfield”, Abbots Road, Abbots Langley, the home of Thomas White, a Railway Clerk, his wife Annie Sevilla White and their six children.

John is listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. On both occasions he was recorded serving with the rank of Private with C Company Eastern Command, Labour Corps. His address was given at 86 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.

John Clarke survived the War.
