Biography
Ernest Castle was born at Borehamwood in the winter of 1892. He was one of four sons and two daughters born to Henry and Sarah Castle. Henry worked as a Brick-layer and in the 1911 Census the family lived at Shenley. In 1911 Ernest was listed working as a Gardener.
He attested and received a Medical on 8th September 1914 at the Watford Recruiting Station. At the time Ernest was working as a Kitchenman at the Leavesden Asylum. He was declared fit for Army Service and was enlisted to Kitchener’s Army, and probably sent home to await mobilisation. Also in September 1914 Ernest married Matilda Alloway at Abbots Langley.
Ernest was mentioned for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, serving with Kitchener’s Army. In February 1915 he was listed with the 4th East Surrey’s, however in the same month, on 22nd February, he was declared “not likely to become an efficient soldier due to chronic rheumatism”. He was discharged on 12th March 1915. His Pension Record noted that his Character on Discharge was “Good”. Ernest returned to Kitters Green, Abbots Langley.
