Biography

Arthur Canvin was one of five brothers from Grove Wharf that served during the Great War. He was born in the winter of 1895 at Kensal Green. He was one of twelve children born to Albert and Clara Canvin. In the 1901 and 1911 Census the family lived at Grove Wharf. In 1901 Albert was employed as a Miller’s Carter, and in the 1911 Census he worked as a General Labourer. By 1911 Albert worked as a Farm Labourer.

Arthur, together with his four brothers, was not registered in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour until September 1916, however it was likely that more than one of them would have been engaged in War Service from much earlier in the War. Arthur’s Medal Roll Card recorded that he was sent to the Balkan Theatre of War on 16th September 1916, so it was likely that he enlisted, was mobilised and received some training before being sent abroad, so should have been recorded in the Roll of Honour from an earlier date. His Service Record has not survived so it is not possible to trace the details of his time in the Army. Arthur was not recorded in the Absent Voter Records, however his Medal Roll Card indicated that he was still serving on 5th December 1919, as a Gunner at the RFA Base.

Arthur and his four brothers all survived the War, and are also commemorated in the Kings Langley Parish Roll of Honour.
