Biography

George Buckoke was born in the autumn of 1897 at Abbots Langley. In the 1911 Census he was recorded living with his parents, William and Agnes Buckoke, and his sister at 91 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. William Buckoke was employed as a Builder’s Foreman.

In December 1915 George was recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Roll of Honour, serving with the Royal Navy Division. From August 1916 through to December 1918 he was recorded serving aboard HMS “Pelorus”, a Third Class Cruiser that had been converted into a Depot Ship traversing the Mediterranean Sea.

George was listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919, still serving with the Royal Navy, and his home address was given at 91 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. In the Autumn 1918 Absent Voter Record he was recorded serving as a Signaller aboard HMS “Carrigan Head” a converted Merchant Ship used as an Escort Ship and travelling back and forth across the Atlantic from the eastern seaboard of the USA to London. In the Spring 1919 and Autumn 1918 Absent Voter Records George served as a Signaller at HMS “Vivid”, a shore establishment and Navy barracks at Devonport.

Cyril Buckoke and William Buckoke also served in the War, and despite their families living in close proximity in Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley, and at times in the Bedmond area it has not been possible to link them. All of the Buckoke boys survived the War.
