Biography

Clifton Bourne was born at Abbots Langley in the spring of 1897, one of two children born to John and Bessie Bourne. In 1901 John Bourne was employed as a Cook’s Assistant at the Asylum, the family lived at Asylum Terrace, Troley Bottom, Abbots Langley. In 1902 Clifton’s sister Winnifred, was born and by 1911 the family had moved to Marlin Square, and John had been promoted to the rank of Cook at the Asylum.

Clifton was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in April 1915,and was shown serving with the Cyclist Corps. Cyclist Units initially provided reconnaissance and message carrying services as part of the coastal defence of the UK. They served at home and abroad throughout the War but as the drain on man-power continued through 1915 and 1916, the Cyclist Corps provided drafts of fit men for the infantry battalions at the Front. Sometime in 1916 Clifton was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was regularly recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour from January 1917 through to the end of the War, and also in the Absent Voter Lists of Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919.

Clifton Bourne survived the War.
