Biography

Cyril Buckoke was born on 13th April 1892 at Abbots Langley. When he was baptised on 15th July 1892 his mother was listed as Rose Buckoke, however no father was recorded, and in the 1901 Census Cyril was recorded living with his grand-parents, James and Elizabeth Buckoke, at Adrian Road, Abbots Langley. James was employed as a Heating Boiler Stoker – possibly at the Asylum. By 1911 Cyril had moved from Abbots Langley and was employed as a Valet at Ropley House, Alresford, Hampshire.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine recorded Cyril Buckoke in its Roll of Honour from June 1916, serving with the Royal Fusiliers. He was regularly recorded each month through to the end of the War. In the final Roll of Honour in December 1918, he was listed with the 32nd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. The 32nd Middlesex was formed from the 63rd Provisional Battalion, which comprised men from Home Service units and from the Territorial Army. In 1916 a number of infantry battalions composed of men who were medically graded unfit for fighting were formed for labouring work. The battalions were trained as infantry but were normally engaged in labouring tasks. The 32nd Middlesex remained in the UK for the duration of the War.

George Buckoke and William Buckoke also served in the War, and despite their families living in close proximity in Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley, and at times in the Bedmond area it has not been possible to link them. All of the Buckoke boys survived the War.
