Biography
The Hertfordshire Advertiser noted Gilbert Brimacombe in the Asylum Roll of Honour that was published on 17th October 1914. The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine recorded him for the first time in November 1914, serving with the Coldstream Guards.
Gilbert was born at Bognor in the autumn of 1892. Augustus Brimacombe, a Head Master at a Board School in Bognor Regis at the time of the 1901 Census, and his wife Martha had four sons and one daughter. The family lived at the School House, but by 1911 they had moved to “The Gables”, Crescent Road, Bognor Regis. Augustus still worked as a Head Master, and Gilbert had gained employment as a Clerk with a Gas Company. At some point before the start of the Great War in August 1914, Gilbert moved from Bognor and was working at the Asylum in Leavesden. He enlisted early in the War, and was recorded in the Leavesden Parish Records “serving with HM Forces” in October 1914. At the time he was working as a Clerk at the Asylum. On 24th February 1915 he moved to France , whilst he was serving with the Coldstream Guards.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine recorded that Gilbert was reported wounded in the December 1915 edition, and this was also reported in the 11th December edition of the Hertfordshire Advertiser. It is not known in which battalion of the Coldstream Guards Gilbert served, and as his Service Record has not survived, it is difficult to piece together his time in the Army. The Parish Magazine listed him serving with the Coldstream Guards throughout the War, through to the final Roll of Honour which was published in December 1918.
Gilbert married Emily Hawkeswood in the Autumn of 1917 at Alcester in Warwickshire.
Gilbert was listed in the autumn 1918 Absent Voter Record, serving with the Reserve Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, with the rank of Lance Corporal. His home address was given at 4 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.
Gilbert Brimacombe survived the War.
