Biography
Walter Barber was born at Bedmond in the autumn of 1874. He was one of six children (one son and five daughters) born to George and Emma Barber. At the time of the 1881 Census the family lived at Bedmond and George worked as a Labourer. However, by the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Buck Lodge Cottage, Cassiobury. George was employed as a Coachman/Groom. At this time Walter had moved from the family how.
In the spring of 1905 Walter married Ada Fleet at Watford, and by the time of the 1911 Census the couple lived with three daughters at No5 Wright’s Buildings, St Albans Road, Watford, where Walter was employed as a Housekeeper.
Walter was not recorded in any of the local Parish records, however, the Watford Illustrated Magazine noted that Walter was serving in France on 2nd October 1915.
Walter’s Medal Roll indicated that for much of the War he served with the Army Service Corps (ASC) with the rank of Driver. The Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 both listed Walter, but by this time he was shown serving with the Military Police, and his address was given at Kingswood Cottages.
Walter Barber survived the War.
