Biography

Arthur Barham was born in 1892 at Abbots Langley, one of two sons and a daughter born to George and Alice Barham of 41 Adrian Road (1901 & 1911 Census). George was employed as a Charge Attendant at the Asylum at the time of both the 1901 and 1911 Census Records. By 1911 Arthur had left the family home and his records cannot be found in the Census of that year.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Arthur in October 1916, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). He was recorded with the RGA each month throughout the War, but was not listed in the Absent Voter Records between Autumn 1918 and Autumn 1919.

There are several Arthur Barham’s listed in the National Archives Service Records, but none served with the Royal Garrison Artillery. After a lengthy search an Arthur Bareham was discovered serving as a Gunner with the 91st Heavy Battery of the RGA. It is anticipated that this was the Abbots Langley man.

Arthur’s brother, Thomas Barham, served with the 13th Kensington (London Regiment), which had been mobilised to Abbots Langley at the declaration of War in August 1914. Thomas served throughout the War and survived.
