Biography

Markland Baldwin was first identified listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. He was not recorded in other Parish records. In both Absent Voter Records he was listed serving as a Sergeant with the Anti-aircraft Defence Command, based at Harwich. His address was given as Abbots Hill, Abbots Langley. The Anti-aircraft Defence Command was part of the Royal Garrison Artillery. From 1915 German Zeppelins and heavy bombers raided southern England and London, and the Command Centre at Harwich was well placed in the flight path to direct defensive operations.

Markland was born in the spring of 1881 at Wheathampstead. He was one of three children born to Benjamin and Martha Baldwin. Benjamin had been born in Leavesden and worked as a Gardener. The family lived at Dell Cottage at Wheathampstead in both the 1891 and 1901 Census. In the 1901 Census Markland was listed working as a Railway Clerk.

Markland Baldwin survived the War.
