Biography

Little is known about Jarrard or Jarrod Durrant. He was listed for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, where he was shown serving with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), and this appeared to be his only link with the village.

Jarrard’s Service Record has survived, and in the UK Royal Navy Registers of Seamen’s Services it was noted that he was born on 11th January 1883 at Ipswich and when he enlisted he gave his occupation as Gardener. In the 1911 Census he had been recorded living at The Gardens, Bonnington”, Hunsdon, near Ware, where he worked as a Gardener.

He joined up with the Royal Navy Air Service on 26th May 1916 and served with HMS “President II” until 31st March 1918. HMS “President II” was a shore establishment near Tower Bridge, and for most of the time a serviceman would be based at another location in London or elsewhere. Between 15th July and 3rd August 1917 Jarrard served at the RNAS Depot at White City in West London, before moving to the RNAS Airship Station at Wormwood Scrubs where he served between 3rd August 1917 and 31st March 1918.

On 31st March 1918 he was transferred to the Royal Air Force (RAF), which came into being from the amalgamation of the RNAS and the Royal Flying Corps the very next day.

Jarrard Durrant survived the War.
