Pre War

William was born in Rickmansworth in 1866 the son of Alfred and Phoebe (nee Crawley) and was baptised there on the 18th of March 1866.

In 1871 the family was living somewhere close to the Whip and Collar Public House, but in 1874 emigrated to Australia, settling in Queensland. William married Mary Alice Darlington on the 23rd of July 1892 and it is thought that they subsequently had seven children.

On enlistment William gave his address as Yandaran, NC Line, Queensland, and his occupation as Dairyman.

He is recorded as enlisting in Brisbane, Australia

Wartime Service

Enlisted Brisbane 21st of March 1916 giving his age as 43 (actually 49).

Embarked Brisbane 8th of August 1916, arrived Plymouth 18th of October. Entered France 12th of December 1916 and joined his Battalion at Etaples 19th of January 1917.

Wounded in the face 11th of April 1917 and, after hospital treatment, rejoined his unit 6th of May.

Received gunshot wounds to the chest and back 11th of June 1917 and died of his wounds in the 2nd Australian General Hospital Wimereux.
