Joseph Benjamin WOODCOCK was born in Worley/Broxbourne, (depending on the document) in Hertfordshire, on 15th/16th December 1895, (depending on the document). Son of William Charles and Caroline Woodcock (nee Barrett). The sixth of seven children.
Joseph was Christened on 24th December 1895, in Wormley, Herts where the family were living at the time, his father’s occupation was recorded as a Carman.
1901 Census records Joseph aged 5, living with his parents, four sisters and two brothers in High Road, Broxbourne, Herts.
Joseph attended Broxbourne C of E Primary School.
1911 Census, Joseph 15, has left school and is working as a Domestic Gardener, living with his parents, three sisters and brother Walter (12), still in High Road, Broxbourne.
On 15th November 1913, his 18th birthday, Joseph enlisted in the Royal Navy, for 12 years, joining at Chatham, Kent, issued with the service number J. 22166.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Joseph was serving with the Royal Navy, aboard HMS “Euryalus”, (a Cressy-Class Armoured Cruiser. He was Invalided out, on 24th August 1915, with Consumption (TB), he is believed to have died at home in Broxbourne, Herts, on 20th November 1915, this is from his Royal Navy service record, and his pension record card, no official register of his death was found to confirm the date and place of death.
Additional Information
His mother Caroline Woodcock was awarded a dependents pension of 5/- a week for life on 5th December 1918.
