We believe this to be the George Clark on the South Mimms Village War memorial.


George CLARK was born Abt. 1892, in St. Phillips, Sheffield, Yorkshire, son of Mr Samuel & Mrs S. Clark. No other pre-war records for George were found.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war in August 1914, we believe George was a serving soldier with the 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry stationed in Dublin, Ireland, they were mobilised for war, and landed at Le Havre, France, on 16th August 1914.


The 2nd Battalion, were in action at the Battle of Mons and the Retreat from Mons 23rd Aug – 24th Sept 1914, Battle of Le Cateau 26th Aug 1914, Battle of the Marne 5th – 12th Sept 1914, Battle of Aisne 12th – 15th Sept 1914, Battle of Le Bassee and Messines 10th Oct – 2nd Nov 1914, First Battle of Ypres 19th Oct – 22nd Nov 1914, Second Battle of Ypres 22nd April – 25th May 1915 and The Capture of Hill 60, 17th April – 7th May 1915, were we believe George was Killed in Action on 7th May 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing in Belgium, Panel 47.

Additional Information

His effects of £5-6s-1d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father Samuel Clark.


His Dependents Pension Record Card records his mother Mrs. S. Clarke, of 13, Oborne Street, Sheffield, Yorks, as his dependent, no value was recorded.


His connection to South Mimms was not found other than he is recorded on the South Mimms Village War Memorial.


CWGC record him as CLARKE, others as CLARK.
