Frank Dockerty was born in Jarrow, Co Durham in 1888 to Francis Dockerty, labourer, and Eleanor (nee O’Dowd).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William (born 1882), Joseph (born 1885),Frank (Francis ) and Ellen (born 1890) were living at 65 Salem Road, Hedworth Monckton & Jarrow, South Shields.
On the 1901 Census the family consisting of Mother, William ( labourer, gas works), Joseph (a rivet catcher in shipyard), Frank (butcher’s errand boy), Ellen, Mary (born 1891), Thomas (born 1893), and Patrick (born 1895) were living at Albion Street Jarrow.
On the 1911 Census Frank was a shipyard labourer, as were William and Joseph, Ellen, Mary (born 1893), Thomas ( born 1895, shipyard rivet heater), Patrick (born 1897, shipyard rivet catcher) were living with his widowed mother at 57, Palmer Terrace, Willington Quay, Wallsend.
Wartime Service
Frank enlisted in 25th (Service) Battalion (2nd Tyneside Irish), Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle as Private 25/293. No Service Record was found for Frank.
The 25th Battalion was formed in Newcastle on 9 Nov 1914 and in Jun 1915 came under orders of 103rd Brigade, 34th Division. Frank in this Division landed in France in Jan 1916 to take part in the Battle of the Somme. On 1 Jul 1916 the Battle of Albert began and Frank was reported killed in action that day.
His remains were not recovered and his remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
Additional Information
War gratuity £7 and arrears of 17s 2d was paid to his mother. His connection to Tring has yet to br discovered.
