Pre War
Augustus Edwin Wilson (also known as Gus) was born in 1899 in Great Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of of Edwin and Elizabeth Wilson.
On the 1901 Census, the family were living at 12 Frithsden, (Nettleden with Potten End Parish), Berkhamsted Rural. They remained at the same address on the 1911 Census, by which time, Augustus was working as a Groom Gardener (Domestic), as was his brother John.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and served with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 26 July 1915, initially as Lance Corporal, but was later promoted to Sergeant.
He sustained wounds to his chest and left leg during the Battle of Ypres and died at No. 32 Casualty Clearing Station in France on 14 August 1917 and is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £17 and pay owning of £6 19s 6d. Brother to John Wilson who was killed in action on 9 August 1916 and is buried at the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France.
