John Charles Miles was born in Berkhamsted on 23 November 1894, the son of Charles Hodgson and Florence Amelia Miles.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Gorseside, Berkhamsted where his father was living on his own means. His father was 57 and his mother 26. John was 6 and his sister Phyllis was 7. They also had 4 servants. (Goreside is a listed building near Berkhamsted golf course) His father was a bookseller/ stationer, freeman of London.
His father died in Berkhamsted in 1911 aged 61 and his mother remarried in 1924 to Edwin Williams and lived at Goreside, Berkhamsted.
He died on 13 January 1948 in Otjiwarongo, South West Africa, after a short illness.
Wartime Service
The external church font/ bird bath is inscribed with "In living memory of John Charles Miles 5th Royal Irish Lancers".
John was listed as a Lieutenant with the 16/5th Irish Lancers from 1915 to 1917 and was promoted to Captain in 1918.
Additional Information
He is not listed in the CWGC records. His mother obtained probate of his estate in London on 30 October 1948 with Derek Webster, chartered accountant and Pietre Hermon Mornay Du Plessis. Effects were £370 2s 2d in England.
