Thomas Nottingham was born in 1880 in Lower Stondon, Beds (baptised 7 Nov 1880 Upper Stondon) to Samuel Nottingham, agricultural labourer and Mary Anne (nee Burnage).
On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Alfred William (born 1869, agricultural labourer), Herbert (born 1871), Bertha Ann (born 1873), Samuel (born 1876), Ada (born 1879 and Thomas were living at Trinity Farm, Lower Stondon, Shillington, Beds.
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Emma (born 1860), Alfred, Herbert, Ada Thomas, Lizzie (born 1883) and George (born 1884) were living at Water End Lodge, the Grange, North Mimms. Also listed was Henry Nottingham (born 1831) and a widower.
Thomas’s mother died in 1898.
On the 1901 Census the family of father, stepmother Emma, Bertha Thomas, were living at St Pauls Cottages, North Mimms. Also listed were John Edward (born 1896) and William (born 1898), both grandsons of Samuel.
Thomas married Ada Louise Vyse at Hatfield on 1 Apr 1907, they had a daughter Violet Ada born 2 Jan 1909. By the 1911 Census the family were living at High Road, South Mimms, Potters Bar. Also listed was John Edward Nottingham, a nephew and working as a stable lad.
Born in Brumfield, Bedfordshire and lived in Potters Bar when he enlisted in New Barnet.
Wartime Service
Thomas attested for Royal Fusiliers on 25 Nov 1915 and was placed on Army Reserve on 26 Nov 1915. He was mobilised on 8 Jun 1916 being allocated as Private G/41414, 14th Royal Fusiliers.
Thomas embarked for France on 4 Oct 1916. On 5 Oct 1916 he was posted to 11 (Service) Battalion Royal Fusiliers and on 14 Oct 1916 while at Infantry Base Depot, Etaples was transferred to Queens Own (Royal West Kent) as G/18683 in 10 (Service) Battalion (Kent County). He may have arrived at this Battalion in time to take part in the Battle of Le Transloy (1- 18 Oct 1916), His Division , 41st, was deployed to Ypres Sector taking part in the Battle of Messines (7-14 Jun 1917) and then 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele), On the opening day of the Battle of Pilkem (31 Jul 1917) Thomas was killed., he was 36.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £4 and arrears of £1 11s 5d was paid to his widow. His widow married on 16 Oct 1917 to Thomas Allwright receiving a further Gratuity of £35 and a payment of 5s per /week for her child.
Brother George Nottingham served as Private M2/106087 in 1040th Company Mechanical Transport Section of the Royal Army Service Corps.
