Harold Baldwin Hudson was born in 1893 in South Shields, County Durham, the son of William and Adah [sic] Hudson and one of five children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 76 King Street, South Shields, Durham where his father was working as a bank cashier. By the 1911 Census he was living with his siblings Hubert, Lilian, Grace and Frank at 66 Greyhound Lane, Streatham, London and listed as civil service student.
He attended Birkbeck College, University of London, where he joined the Officer Training Corps, and was a Fellow of The Entomological Society.
At the time of his death in 1916 his parents were living at The Ferns, Upper Highway, Kings Langley. His father was honorary pastor of the Zion Chapel 1914-1919. they later lived in Croydon, Surrey.
Wartime Service
He joined the Bedfordshire Regiment as Second Lieutenant and served in France from 28 August 1916.
Harold was killed in action at Beaumont Hamel, aged 23, while leading his platoon against heavy machine gun fire on 14 November 1916. He is buried near Englebelmer, at Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart, France.
Additional Information
His father (bank pensioner) obtained probate of his estate in London on 11 January 1917 with effects of £31 19s 1d. He also received pay owing of £69 3s 9d.
