David Corse Glen was born on 27 June 1894 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the son of David Corse and Mary Tait Glen (nee Virtue). He was one of two children, with a younger sister Joan. His parents had married on 30 June 1893 in Kelvin, Glasgow.
On the 1901 Census the family had moved to England and were living at 17 The Avenue, Walthamstow, Essex, where his father was working as a dealer in foreign produce. By 1911 they had moved again to 'Bargarran', Gallow's Hill Lane, Abbot's Langley, King's Langley, Hertfordshire, at which time 16 year old David was an engineering student and his father's occupation was given as consultant engineer. David had attended Watford Grammar School from September 1908 to June 1910, followed by the City and Guilds College, University of London.
His father died on 14 August 1920 in Abbot’s Langley, Herts, aged 56, and was buried on 17 August at St Paul’s, Langleybury, Herts.
Wartime Service
He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps 17 August 1914, aged 20, 5’7″ tall, having been Platoon Sergeant in the University of London Officer Training Corps, but later transferred to the 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment as Lieutenant.
He was entitled to the Victory, British and 1914-15 Star medals, having arrived in France on 8 August 1915. David was initially reported missing between 25-29 September 1915 and later presumed killed in action at the Battle of Loos during an attack on Hulluch on 25 September 1915. Originally buried at “Lone Tree” Cemetery 3000 yards S.E. of Vermelles, he was reinterred at Dud Corner in 1919.
Additional Information
His mother received pay owing of £42 18s 3d and obtained probate of his estate on 31 May 1916 with effects of £73 10s 11d.
